The Nothing Serious Dictionary
User Guide #1: A lexicon fashioned from scraps of cosmic words and cerebral turns of phrase. This is the language of human ideas.
Dearest Beings,
This is the first transmission of a new series entitled: User Guides. These will be rare due to the fact that the Nothing Serious Cosmos promotes total freedom in how each being chooses to navigate it.
But, during these early testing stages, it might be useful to light a torch every now and then for those who enjoy more clarity.
So, if you wish, explore the linguistic model below. Peace and love.
I. COSMOS
Nothing Serious Cosmos:
All ideas that are created, curated, and maintained by Nothing Serious make up the matter of its cosmos. This could include both tangible and immaterial ideas in the form of books, films, albums, artwork, clothing, conversations, experiences, exhibitions — The examples should be able to roll on forever.
The N.S. Website remains the trunk from which all these creative branches stem.
Three Spheres of Nothing Serious:
Enter. Take. Join. | Creation. Curation. Community.
Transport:
The act of moving between the spheres of Nothing Serious Cosmos.
II. BEINGS
Nothing Serious Being:
Any heart, soul, or mind that engages with Nothing Serious, be that through collaboration or absorption. These are beings who are invested in the Nothing Serious way of looking, laughing, thinking, for they believe that the art is in the idea. One becomes an NS Being by subscribing to the Substack for free.
Higher Beings:
Beings who financially support Nothing Serious through paid subscriptions. Higher Beings receive access to the Nothing Serious Archive, Conversation, and Forming Sphere.
NS Conversation:
A space where Higher Beings can interact with one another in an ever-updating conversation on art, ideas, humour, meaning, and more.
NS Archive:
A storage vault for all Nothing Serious ideas. At the end of every month, ideas are transported from the NS Website to the NS Substack to make way for the new.
NS Audio:
Ideas translated into podcast form so that they can be absorbed on the move. This feature is used a lot for custom transmissions, readings, and interviews.
III. IDEAS
Idea:
What does Nothing Serious mean by the term Idea? Well, ideas are sparks of creative magic that fuse to form finished pieces of art. Think of the idea as the soul and the art as the body.
Homegrown:
Ideas created by Nothing Serious.
Sourced:
Ideas curated by Nothing Serious.
Essence:
An expression of an idea’s abstract emotional core, rather than its literal and material form. Here’s an example for the published idea We Live in a Shed:
“There’s a certain magic in creating something with your closest friends. As adulthood strives to rip you apart, you search for an excuse, an anchor, something that will draw you all back together, keep you laughing, perhaps remind you of why it is you became such good friends in the first place. This was We Live in a Shed.”
Absorb:
To take an idea into your mind and allow your consciousness to evaluate it, resonate with it, hate it, understand it, question it.
Enter (Idea):
The process by which Beings access the digital spaces curated by Nothing Serious. For instance, you enter the idea of We Live in a Shed as though it were a physical exhibition, displaying various building blocks of the idea, insights into the creative process, and, of course, the finalised art form.
These Enter buttons are font doors to an online record store, a liminal library, a cerebral comedy club, a psychic gallery space. You enter ideas to absorb them.
Published Ideas:
A finalised piece created by Nothing Serious. Published ideas are typically more expansive in their nature and contain within them a multitude of ideas, alternative paths taken, insights into process, pages of rough work, areas of inspiration — All roads that lead the artist to the final creative piece.
The aim with published ideas is to allow concepts the space to explore their many possible manifestations without being limited by required briefs, known mediums, or mass expectations.
Sometimes, the wrong turns are just as interesting as the right ones. All provide an insight into the mind of the artist and the spiritual journey they take to create something cohesive and honest.
There is so much art in the process of creation. So much so, that when it’s exhibited it could be viewed as a more accurate portrait of the idea’s true form, with the final product only embodying an echo of the overall dream.
Published Ideas present the ideation process itself as the art.
Ever-Updating Ideas:
Areas of ideas that are constantly being added to. These can range from homegrown pieces to sourced material. Ever-Updating sections include: Words, Minds, Exhibitions, Radio, Library, Channels, Sit-Down Comedy.
Forming:
A status assigned to Published Ideas that are currently being worked on by Nothing Serious. In other words, neurons are still forming connections for this idea to be fully realised. Updates on these ideas exist within the Forming Sphere on the Nothing Serious Substack.
Cosmic Keys:
If Nothing Serious operated under corporate terms, the Cosmic Key could be defined as its Product. One of Nothing Serious’ core aims is to provide its Beings with new ways into art they may never have otherwise resonated with.
Think of it as an unlocking.
When suddenly the art is given new context, new framing, and something inside your mind clicks. A switch that cannot be unflipped.
The thing with these Cosmic keys, however, is that their effectiveness is bound to subjective life experience. One cannot be forced to connect with an idea. We cannot fully control inspiration. All we can do is provide a space in which inspiration seems almost inevitable.
These are the Cosmic Keys of Nothing Serious. An invitation. A way in.
